Topic: Solaris 8 for retro computing
Wow, look at me getting the meeting notice out on time. The meeting link
will be sent on the 18th, but I thought I'd provide some advance warning
for the topic this time.
Since the topic of NIS and NFS was a topic of discussion recently in
another meeting, I thought I'd show you how to get started with Solaris 8.
I'll show you how to get it installed and running on your network. As a
security precaution, do not allow it to reach the internet, it is not
secure any more. It can be secured reasonably well, but that is out of
scope for the meeting. If you have the inclination and the processing
power, you can create a few of these systems and set things up the way
they were done back in 2002.
We will not wait for the install to finish simply because it will
probably take longer than the meeting time, depending on your base
hardware. There is a reason it was called slowaris by the users back in
the day. I'd do this with HP-UX, but the Solaris resources are much more
readily available to use.
Cheers,
Scott
