I’ve been a little slow posting, not sure it’s laziness or just wasn’t feeling up to it. The main topic starting out was the certification item Jim had mentioned. There was a discussion about a year ago on the SAGE mailing list about such a thing and both Kelwin and I had both posted responses.

I won’t post Kelwin’s response, but I will duplicate mine below:

First off, I’d like to thank Yanick for the great presentation. It’s been a while since I looked at new features in perl and I’m inspired to install 5.12 and start utilizing all of the stuff that’s now available. Who knows, might be some good thinks for the $DAYJOB hiding in there. I did ask for a copy of the slides and as soon as I get them, I’ll post them to the download section.

Update: Yanick has posted the link for the slides, in the format they were presented to the group. You can get the presentation on his site.

Another item I mentioned at the meeting was VMware’s ESXi training offer. You can find more details on the VMware Community Blog. The short story is that they give you a free three hour session on ESXi 4.1 and after completing it and filling out a short survey, you get an ebook on planning, deployment and security. Check the link for full details.

As we are all aware, the next meeting will not be at Pythian, so we will most likely end up somewhere in Bells Corners. I’ll be looking for a location over the next couple of weeks. If anyone knows of a free room we could use somewhere, let me know. I’m pretty sure I can find a room somewhere, but if there is something already available, why not use it? Worst case is getting party area at a bar or restaurant. The plus side is we would have running snacks and drinks. Worst case is we would have to buy something.

Upcoming events:

  • The IPv6 summit is the 26th, just in case you have forgotten.
  • The Ottawa Chapter of the HTCIA is putting on a training day May 26th titled “From the Beginning: First Responders and Digital Evidence” for those interested in digital forensics. Check the website for more details.
  • BSDCan 2011 is also next month. May 13 and 14 at the University of Ottawa. Again, visit the website for details.

Just so we have some notes fro the meeting, I have to provide the following presentations before our next meeting:

  • The finished Secure FTP Server presentation
  • The SSL Certificate and useful commands presentation
  • A short piece on care and feeding of an Apache based Secure file downloading service

I mentioned BSDCan 2011 again. http://www.bsdcan.org – the site appears to be working now, so it must have been an anomaly. I meant to pass out DVDs for PCBSD to everyone, but only managed to give out a few after the meeting. I’ll bring some more to the next meeting.

We did talk about a few other things, but they did not stick in my head and I didn’t think to take any notes, so if anyone wants to remind me, please either comment or send me an email.

Suggestions for any new topics are welcome as well.  Bruce mentioned fortigate boxes, so maybe we could impose on him to give a short talk about the product.

We now have a group on LinkedIn, so if you are a LinkedIn member, sign up!

This may help promote the group at a professional level. Thanks for the idea Jim!
